Save money by discovering a new spring wardrobe in your very own closet, among clothes you already have.

The first step to rocking a frugal new spring wardrobe is to spend some time looking at the different fashion trends for the current season. Go online and Google men’s or women’s “spring [year] fashion trends.” When you’ve picked your three favorite trends you’re ready to move on to the next step.

Next, you’re going to prune your wardrobe. Go to your closet and pull out your spring-y items. You know, all the shorts, T-shirts, skirts, dresses and denim you wore last year. Then ruthlessly remove anything that doesn’t fit anymore, is a little faded, or that you just don’t wear often. Put all those items in a donation pile. Don’t keep clothes that keep you from looking and feeling your best.

Now try to find the three trends you liked for the current season. If you can find them among what you already have — start wearing them! Mix things up.

If you don’t already have the trends you liked, think about one to three of those items you absolutely love and would enjoy wearing throughout spring and summer. Instead of purchasing these items from a regular retail store, why not check out an online consignment shop such as ThredUp? The cool thing about ThredUp is you can request a closet cleanout kit to ship the clothes you pruned from your wardrobe in exchange for cash or credit. You can also just donate those items per ThredUp’s mission.

Or go to your local thrift store to see if they have the items you’re looking for. Thrift shops can be a little overwhelming to those who haven’t thrifted before. Give it a chance and you may find yourself falling in love with the amount you save on clothes. Fortunately, thrift shops have become a lot savvier about merchandizing their stores and having items organized so customers can find items much more easily and save time searching for what they’re looking for.

This year, save money by shopping your closet and figuring out how to creatively use what you already have. If you still find yourself wanting something to freshen up your wardrobe, look at purchasing some fun costume jewelry that will make your outfits pop.
